Allmendinger Overcomes at Loudon
Posted on: July 17, 2013
At the slick 1.058-mile oval where passing always is at a premium, A.J. Allmendinger and the #51 Phoenix Construction Chevrolet team used sublime strategy and impeccable patience to pick their way through nightmarish traffic and wrecks involving 15 of 43 cars.
Lap 14, early in the race at Loudon, Allmendinger came in contact with those wrecking on the frontstretch and had to pit numerous times for repairs. This put the #51 Chevrolet down two laps to the leaders.
Now three laps down when the caution came out around lap 78, the team decided to do a wave around and get one of their laps back. This strategy worked out perfectly as the caution quickly flew again around lap 80. The team then pitted for four tires and a trackbar adjustment to reel in the handling of the car.
Around lap 156 the team was pitting the #51 Phoenix Construction Chevrolet when the caution came out. However, A.J. was able to get ahead of leader and maintained his position just two laps down. Lap 201 brought out a caution for debris and once again they stayed out for the wave around to be 1 lap down.
Lap 210 came quickly and with it yet another caution. This time the team pitted and dropped the trackbar and came out of the pits the first car one lap down. When lap 218 rolled around the #51 was back on the tail end of the lead lap with 4 fresh tires and fuel and a tug on the fenders to make sure there was no tire rub.
Through all of the chaos, being two and even three laps down, and all of the caution events, the team rallied for a 22nd place finish on the lead lap.
Look for A.J. Allmendinger and the #51 team to rack up another great finish at Indy.
